Overview of the Case
Victims: Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker.
Incident Date: January 24, 2023, in Braxton, Mississippi.
Perpetrators: Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey and a group of former deputies known internally as the "Goon Squad" due to their use of excessive force and failure to report it.
Abuses Suffered: Nearly two hours of torture, including beatings while handcuffed, waterboarding, tasing, sexual assault, and an instance where Jenkins was shot in the mouth, causing near-fatal injuries.
Cover-up: The deputies turned off their body cameras, planted false methamphetamine charges against Jenkins, and stole home surveillance video.
Legal Action: A federal civil rights lawsuit was filed seeking $400 million in damages. Associated Press investigations later linked the deputies to at least four violent encounters with Black men starting in 2019, two of which resulted in deaths.
