Dr. Julie Vargas believes every competition horse should be in some phase of prehab using movement, conditioning, and body-awareness exercises to help prepare the body for the demands of training and competition before an injury occurs. But prehab doesn’t have to mean an elaborate new program. Carrot stretches, ground poles, varied surfaces, cross-training, appropriate fitness, and intentional recovery can all become part of a horse’s regular routine. The key is consistency. Maintaining an athlete is an ongoing process.
