Honestly, better views than Mt. Pisgah…
Haystack Mountain in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom WOWED us. It was a last minute decision too and I’m so glad we did it. I will warn you, there is VERY LITTLE PARKING at both trailheads.
Here’s more of what you need to know:
LOGISTICS:
+ Distance: 4.2 miles round-trip (out-and-back) or 3.5 miles (if looped via the road)
+ Elevation Gain: 1,020 (ish) ft
+ Time: 2 - 3 hours
+ Trailheads: North Trailhead (off Long Pond Rd) & South Trailhead (off Hinton Hill Rd)
TRAIL + VIEWS:
+ The summit area offers 3 stunning, narrow ledge lookouts with views over Willoughby Gap, Lake Willoughby, and the surrounding Kingdom hills.
+ Out & Back: Take either the North or South Trail straight to the summit and back down the way you came.
+ The Loop Option: Hike up one side, descend the other side, and walk back along Long Pond Road / Hinton Hill Road to complete the loop. The road is not busy and we ran into hikers doing this.
Enjoy!
