Support that could happen today shouldn't wait for a diagnosis.
Think about a pupil who can't follow spoken instructions. The fix might be as simple as writing the steps on the board. That doesn't need a referral. It needs someone to notice.
In February 2026, the Department for Education's Neurodivergence Task and Finish Group said educational support should not depend on a clinical diagnosis. Prof. Amanda Kirby read four recent reports from England side by side and found the same thread: needs should matter more than labels when it comes to everyday help.
A diagnosis can still matter a lot. It can explain things. It can lead to treatment.
The steps on the board can go up this afternoon.
