Japanese authorities are investigating Toyama officials over claims they inflated the city’s census population by more than 2,000 people. Police raided Toyama city hall after the central government filed a criminal complaint over the alleged falsification. The census is used to calculate government funding, and the city may have received about 60 million yen ($378,000) more than it should have. The case comes as Japan faces a shrinking and rapidly aging population, with Toyama’s actual population falling below 400,000 last year.
