One of my high school teachers once told me I was a waste of talent. I was the kid who had all the talent and potential, but my grades were terrible, and I had a hard time in school. The hardest part for me was always getting started and building momentum. Once I was moving and gaining ground, I could excel from there.
I understood the material, but the work did not interest me, which made it very hard to begin. I excelled at sports because they were fun, competitive, and getting started was easy. But at school, I was the quiet kid, and I just couldn't get going.
It wasn't until I was in my 5th year in college that I realized that I had to create my own study system because nothing else was working and my grades were terrible. I taught myself a study method that made school interesting and the work I had to do interesting. From there, the A’s and B’s came.
Years later, at the age of 47, I was diagnosed with ADHD at 47.
