There are hidden wonders all around Butterfly Pavilion, and our fascinating velvet worms are just one of many! Eoperipatus totoro, also known as the Totoro velvet worm, are an incredible species that we’re working to learn more about under our care. These unique animals require plenty of hiding places, moisture, and humidity, so our Animal Care team is currently developing husbandry protocols to ensure they receive the best care possible. With more research and experience, we hope that one day we can put them on display for our guests! One thing we do know? They’re wildly fascinating! Velvet worms have specialized structures that allow them to shoot sticky slime at their prey, immobilizing them before they eventually make their meal.
