Tensions were high May 15th 2026 as an uncertain future heads for Bowie State University. Early last week, President Aminta H. Breaux announced that there will be layoffs in the 2026-27 fiscal year and an additional 2% cost of attendance will be added. Many Staff and Students were frustrated including the local 1297 of AFSME ( the American Federation of State ) which has a union chapter on Bowie State’s campus. The union, as well as staff, believe that their voices are not being heard and that they should have a vote on what happens on campus, without fear of retaliation from Administration. In spite of the situation, Dr. Breaux claims that there is hope in this dire situation; if we step into the room and talk it out together.
