Congratulations to Navi Pillay, winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. 👏🏆 At 85, the South African jurist is honoured for her work promoting peace and international law. Pillay was the first non-white woman appointed a High Court judge in South Africa, and went on to serve on the Rwanda tribunal, the International Criminal Court and as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. She sat on the landmark ruling that found rape can be an act of genocide. Only 21 women have ever won the Nobel Peace Prize, against 92 men. She is the first South African woman to win, and the third woman in four years. Pillay was told she’d won while at her desk as the Nobel Committee had been unable to reach her. Her reaction was that it “must be a joke!" Certainly not.
