After waiting 10 years for a road, villagers in Uttarakhand have decided to take matters into their own hands. Residents of Bashti Tok in Rudraprayag’s Madmaheshwar Valley have begun building a motor road themselves through shramdaan, or voluntary community labour, after years of waiting for government action. Their effort reflects the determination of people who simply want better connectivity and easier access to essential services. Yet, it also raises an important question: why should villagers have to build their own roads after waiting so long? The villagers now hope the government will step in and support their efforts. Their determination deserves attention, but basic infrastructure should not require a decade of waiting.
