Turkey is one of the world's largest exporters of natural stones and is home to nearly 3,000 quarries. One section of travertine in these quarries can weigh as much as 600 tons. To free these gigantic slabs, workers drill through the rock and saw it with a cable coated with industrial diamonds. We visited the Alimoglu family, who operates quarries that can yield up to 35,000 tons of travertine a month.
