Vivienne Yang says she "always had the American Dream" growing up. She moved from Taiwan to the US in 2018 to study at Columbia University and later built a career in New York's tech industry. After the new administration took office, Yang says she felt "a lot more fear" and uncertainty in her day-to-day life. Her experience came as the Trump administration introduced a $100,000 fee for new H-1B petitions in September 2025. After her visa was rejected, Yang says she now has a better understanding of what living abroad and the American Dream look like in reality.
