An Auckland woman was sentenced to two months in jail after her dog, Nuggi, died from severe obesity. She told SPCA officers she fed him eight to 10 pieces of chicken a day on top of his regular dog biscuits. Nuggi was discovered in 2021 weighing almost 120 pounds and barely able to move. She was also ordered to pay $1,222.15 in reparations and banned from owning animals.
A necropsy later revealed Nuggi also had liver disease and Cushing’s disease. The SPCA’s chief executive described him as “one of the most obese animals we’ve ever come across.”
