Michael Andrews’s dream-like, marine scene swam past its estimate today at #SothebysLondon. Watch auctioneer Tom Eddison lead a six-minute bidding battle for ‘Butterfly Fish,’ which achieved £704,000 in The Contemporary Evening Auction, presented in partnership with stregishotels. This 1978 work depicts a solitary Butterfly fish swimming in a tropical-feeling ocean. It’s a mysterious, sublime scene that reveals both Andrews’s technical brilliance and the deeper symbolic meanings he placed into his renowned fish series. The London Sales will conclude on 16 October with The Contemporary Day Auction and The David Hockney Sale: 20 Flowers from Normandy. Register to bid at the link in bio.
