A young Michelangelo Pistoletto stares directly at you in ‘Autoritratto,’ one of the earliest and most important images in his career. It’s among the artist’s very first ‘Mirror Paintings,’ one of the most widely celebrated series in postwar Italian art.
Begun in 1962, the series is ongoing and open-ended, one Pistoletto has continued to revisit for over 60 years. While working on a self-portrait in 1961, he saw his own reflection in the glossy, varnished canvas. In that moment, he saw a greater possibility: not just a painted image of himself, but a means of drawing space, time and the viewer directly into the work.
‘Autoritratto’ came soon after this discovery. Here, Pistoletto used polished steel rather than painted canvas. It features a life-size version of Pistoletto drawn from a photograph that also included his first wife Marzia Calleri and the artist Renato Rinaldi.
