Human color vision is based on three main classes of cone photoreceptors, but many animals have more complex visual systems. Birds and several fish possess four types of photoreceptors, allowing them to detect ultraviolet wavelengths that humans cannot see. Mantis shrimp are even more unusual, with eyes containing many different spectral receptors. Having more photoreceptors does not necessarily mean an animal experiences a richer version of our color wheel. Their brains process visual information differently, creating a sensory world that can be fundamentally different from ours.
