The Boötes Void is one of the largest known cosmic voids, spanning roughly 330 million light years. It is not literally an empty hole in space. Instead, it is an enormous region where galaxies are dramatically less concentrated than they are in surrounding areas. Large scale cosmic structure resembles a vast web, with galaxies concentrated along filaments surrounding enormous underdense regions called voids. Only a small number of galaxies have been identified within the Boötes Void, making it one of the most striking examples of the Universe's large scale structure.
