The Kalyazin RT 64 is a 64 meter radio telescope in Russia designed to receive extremely weak radio signals from space. Unlike optical telescopes, radio telescopes detect electromagnetic radiation at much longer wavelengths than visible light. Its enormous dish gives it a large collecting area, allowing astronomers and communications systems to detect and track distant signals. The telescope is part of a long tradition of using huge antennas for radio astronomy and spacecraft communication, where detecting incredibly faint signals requires both sensitive receivers and large collecting surfaces.
