The dream of playing college sports drives many Long Island athletes and their families. From a young age, the journey is paved with sacrifice — time, money and pressure. For many, the data shows that dream can be out of reach. Families envision the investment will pay off down the road with an athletic scholarship — a "free ride" that comes with tuition, housing, books, meals and fees — and a stage to perform at the highest level. For most, a surprise awaits. The process is a grueling one, and the hope of playing in college never materializes.
