Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, and more than 100 other New York officials sent a letter today to the city’s parking garage and lot owners with one ask: don’t let ICE use your property as a staging area.
City law already bars ICE from staging operations on City-owned property without a judicial warrant. Private lots aren’t covered, and the letter says ICE has been using them across the city, from two bank parking lots on Northern Boulevard in Queens to a garage on Morton Street in Manhattan.
The letter points to Oct. 8 in Marble Hill, where, it says, ICE agents surrounded a car and shot 28-year-old Oscar Belgal in the neck while his 5-year-old son was inside. Officers had been staging out of a private lot a few blocks away.
Some owners have already acted. On Morton Street, an operator removed ICE vehicles from a garage after neighbors spoke up.
