The Trump administration is suing California to block the state from counting mail ballots from more than 20,000 voters it claims are likely non-citizens.
The lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court in Los Angeles, asks a judge to stop California from tabulating those ballots until each voter’s immigration status is verified.
It follows a letter earlier this week in which the DOJ gave state officials 48 hours to review its list of alleged non-citizen voters, which was handed over on a thumb drive. The department also demanded that returned ballots be segregated and that unsent ballots be withheld from anyone on the list.
The DOJ hasn’t publicly shown how it built the list or how many people on it are actually ineligible to vote.
