The Department of Homeland Security is rejecting a federal watchdog’s recommendation that ICE body cameras turn on automatically during incidents.
A new Government Accountability Office report found that ICE lacks consistent guidance on when officers should record, which leaves the call to individual agents. CBP already uses auto-activation technology. ICE doesn’t.
DHS argues that automatic recording could capture informants, victims, or protesters. But GAO warns that missing footage erodes transparency and public trust. DHS has said officers weren’t wearing cameras during two deadly ICE shootings in Texas and Maine this summer.
