As Chair of Penn Presbyterian's
#PRIDE Committee, nurse Jenna Mechalas is a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ representation in the medical field, emphasizing its impact on patient outcomes.
"Having more LGBTQ+ people on staff, whether disclosed openly or not, improves patient care," she says. "Across the U.S., many LGBTQ+ patients report harassment, mistreatment, and outright denial of care. Increased representation on staff helps break down barriers, enabling patients to feel more comfortable disclosing their queer status or pronouns. This allows for a more holistic approach to their care, in turn improving their overall health."
