Coming to The Breakers later this year is this powerful bronze relief Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney created as a study for a long-gone World War I monument.
The Preservation Society recently acquired several sculptures and drawings by Whitney, who summered at The Breakers in her youth and later founded the Whitney Museum of American Art.
This important piece, titled “America at War” (detail) represents one of two scenes she sculpted for a Victory Arch at New York’s Madison Square. Fortunately, Whitney had bronze casts made of her studies for these panels. The arch itself was hastily built of wood and plaster in 1919, loomed over several parades of troops, then was torn down a year later.
Until recently, this bronze sculpture was in the collection at Whitney’s Long Island studio. It is currently in conservation and will be installed outside The Breakers, at the conclusion of the tour.
