Today is the 200th birthday of the beloved Christmas poem commonly known as “’Twas the Night Before Christmas”! It was first published anonymously in the Troy (New York) Sentinel on December 23, 1823. Do you know about the poem's Newport connection? Clement C. Moore, to whom the poem is attributed, had a summer home at 25 Catherine Street in the 1850s, long after the poem was written. The Victorian-style home still exists. Moore died there in 1863 and his funeral was held at historic Trinity Church. Moore said he wrote the poem for his children. Certainly it has delighted young and old for two centuries. “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!” #NewportMansions #GildedAge #TheGildedAge #VisitNewport #VisitNewEngland
