To celebrate Chateau-sur-Mer's reopening and new audio tour, we're looking back at the well-traveled family who called this National Historic Landmark home. The Wetmores of Chateau-sur-Mer in the 19th century were people who loved to travel – so much so that many of their children were born in Europe. George Peabody Wetmore (pictured) was born in London on this date in 1846. In turn, three of his four children were born in Europe: Edith in Geneva, Maude in Paris and Rogers in Paris. This was during the 1870s and early 1880s, when George and his wife, Edith, spent much time in Europe while extensive renovations were being made to their Newport cottage. Wetmore went on to become governor of Rhode Island and a U.S. senator. Learn more about him and his family when you take the new self-guided audio tour of Chateau-sur-Mer, now open daily through October 1. #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #historichomes #gildedage #gildedagemansions (p: Bain News Service Collection)
