For Women’s History Month, we pay tribute to Katherine Urquhart Warren (1897-1976), one of the founders of the Preservation Society and its longest-serving president. This portrait was painted in 1922 by Matilda Olive Bigelow Pell (1895-1972).
Mrs. Warren and her husband, George H. Warren Jr., were among the first to respond to the cause of saving Hunter House and helped form the Preservation Society for that purpose in 1945.
Mrs. Warren acted first as Vice President, then as President from 1946-1975. During this period, the Preservation Society acquired the majority of properties in its care and helped to ensure that the City-by-the-Sea would continue as one of the most historically intact cities in America.
The painting was a gift of Mr. George H. Warren, 2016.
