The tradition of calling cards was both a formality and a necessity among the upper classes during the Gilded Age. At a time when home visits were more common – and in the absence of text messages, email and voicemail – it provided a way to let someone know you had stopped by if they were not home (or not disposed to receive guests). And it was an indicator of social status – much depended upon whom you received or who received you.
If you come by The Breakers or Marble House during opening hours, no need to leave your card – we will be there!
