Today during Women’s History Month, we spotlight Edith Wharton (1862-1937), one of the most extraordinary women of her time. Best known as a novelist, she was the first woman to receive a Pulitzer Prize for a novel, “The Age of Innocence.” But she had another side, which earned her another prestigious prize: the French Legion of Honor, awarded for her work during the First World War. Not only was Wharton one of the few journalists allowed on the front lines, but she also organized relief efforts for war refugees, including hostels, schools and a tuberculosis hospital.
