Pauline E. Hopkins is one of the Black women writers of the late 19th century who could serve as an inspiration for Peggy Scott, the up-and-coming writer in gildedagehbo on hbomax. Born in 1859 to free parents of color, Hopkins saw her first original play, “Slaves’ Escape or The Underground Railroad,” staged in Boston in 1880, when she was 21. However, 20 years passed before her literary career took off. In a series of four novels published from 1900 to 1903, as well as in her work as a magazine journalist, Hopkins used her talent to boldly confront the racism and violence afflicting African-Americans. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #fridayfacts #gildedagehbo
