When Peggy Scott, played by deneebenton, visits her parents in Episode 4 of gildedagehbo on hbomax, it’s hard to miss the romantic American landscape paintings hanging in the Scott home. It brought to mind the many Gilded Age artists who painted such scenes in and around Newport, including one of the most accomplished African-American artists of the period, Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901). Bannister began his career in Providence after moving there with his wife, Christiana Carteaux, a successful hairdresser and wigmaker. He was co-founder of the Providence Art Club, which still exists. His Newport-area landscapes and seascapes are in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others. blackhistory blackhistorymonth audramcdonald #johndouglasthompson #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #NewportMansions #gildedagehbo #gildedage #gildedagemansions #gildedagemansion #mansionsofthegildedage...
