The design of The Breakers was inspired by the Renaissance palaces built by Italian merchant princes, so it’s fitting that it contains Italian furnishings to match. One of a pair, this circa-1680 Venetian giltwood armchair is original to the house. It is distinguished by its shaped and molded frame carved with foliage; a crest rail centered with an ornamental mask; scrolled armrests with carved foliate masks; a lambrequin apron below the seat; four tapered paneled legs; and an X-form stretcher connecting the legs with raised curling leaves at center.
Look for it in the Great Hall!
