This French c. 1800 gilt bronze mantel clock from the collection at Chepstow shows a classically dressed woman engaged in a variety of scholarly pursuits from which we can all take inspiration. The allegorical figure casually leans against the clock case reading a book, while next to her are scientific instruments, and opposite are navigational tools.
