Visitors to Marble House, which reopened yesterday, will find these two water pitchers on the dresser in Alva Vanderbilt’s Bedroom. They are part of a circa-1820 nine-piece toilet service by the French porcelain factory Locré & Russinger. Their necks are shaped into the profile of Napoleon Bonaparte wearing an Egyptian-style headdress. The service highlights the Egyptomania that remained popular under the Bourbon restoration and the reign of King Louis Philippe. (Gift of the Estate of Mr. Frederick H. Prince).
