This impressive 19th-century, English-made, Louis XIV-style wall cabinet graces the North Gallery at The Elms. It is decorated with ornate gilt bronze mounts and veneered with burl walnut and kingwood. The cabinet was retailed by W. & J. Sloane House of Furnishings in New York City, whose treasurer, William Douglas Sloane (1844-1915), was married to Cornelius Vanderbilt II’s sister Emily (1852-1946). Not original to The Elms, the cabinet was given to the Preservation Society by Doris Duke, who was very involved in the society’s effort to save The Elms from demolition in 1962. #NewportMansions #TheElms #history #preserve #sundayfunday #sundayread #weekendvibes #DiscoverNewport
