Today is the birthday of one of the most celebrated architects to leave his stamp on Newport: Stanford White (1853-1906). As a partner in McKim, Mead & White, he helped create the Shingle Style, of which the Isaac Bell House is considered the masterpiece. The Shingle Style was considered very modern, even radical for its time. Completed in 1883, the Isaac Bell House incorporates elements of the then-trendy Queen Anne and Arts and Crafts styles as well as Moorish-inspired interior details and Japanese influences such as the bamboo-style columns of the wrap-around porch.
