The 400-year-old tapestry Homage to Alexander is finally back in place at The Breakers. This morning, the Preservation Society’s conservation staff removed the tapestry from its crate, which returned just days ago from Belgium where the textile was expertly cleaned and conserved by De Wit Royal Manufacturers. Then it was methodically unrolled (see video) and attached to a newly designed frame system using high-strength Velcro. The tapestry will hang from its top edge for a few days to stabilize and naturally straighten before its sides are also attached to the frame. New velvet panels will be installed along both vertical sides to fill the niche. While we believe the niche was specifically designed for this tapestry, the length and width of the niche are not the same as the tapestry. Some historical mysteries are yet to be solved! When the side panels are in place, the four-year saga of this historic artwork’s restoration and reinstallation will be complete.
