Visitors to Marble House will find this c. 1755 pastel portrait hanging on the rear wall of Alva Vanderbilt’s sitting room on the mezzanine level. Attributed to the French painter Jean Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779), the portrait depicts an unidentified female sitter. She is shown at bust length wearing a blue-gray dress trimmed with pink ribbon. More pink ribbon encircles her neck, and pink flowers adorn her powdered hair. While not original to the house, the portrait reflects Mrs. Vanderbilt’s love of 18th century French fine & decorative arts and fits the feminine décor of the room. Gift of Mrs. Cyril B. Judge. The Breakers, Marble House, The Elms and Green Animals are open. Link in bio.
