In 20 years as a merchant in the China trade, including several years living in that country, William S. Wetmore of Chateau-sur-Mer acquired a variety of Chinese objects. So many packages arrived at the Newport house that some were not opened for decades. Wetmore’s granddaughter Maude, in a 1936 interview, said she and her sister had recently unpacked dishes “from the original boxes shipped to William Shepard Wetmore last century.” This was 74 years after his death in 1862. The Butler’s Pantry at Chateau-sur-Mer is well stocked with ceramic dishware, including Chinese porcelain and English plates decorated with the family crest of a falcon. Only three days remain to visit Chateau-sur-Mer. It will be open Saturday, Sunday and Columbus Day from 10 a.m. to last admission at 5 p.m., and then it closes for the season. Link in bio.
