This Aesthetic Movement planter comes from the collection at Chateau-sur-Mer. The tile-lined planter is raised on a turned trestle base with incised neo-Greco foliate gilt decoration. The tiles, produced by Minton & Co. and designed by Christopher Dresser (British, born in Scotland, 1834-1904), depict a symmetrical design. Dresser was among the most influential designers of the 19th century. He began as a botanist, but when he failed to be appointed Chair of Botany at University College, London, he directed himself more into design. His works were included in the 1862 International Exhibition in London; there he was first exposed to Japanese art, from which he took profound influence. In addition to ceramics, Dresser designed wallpaper, textiles, carpets, cast-iron furniture and metalwork. (Gift of Mr. Ronald S. Kane, 2009). Chateau-sur-Mer is open weekends until October 11th.
