Here’s an interesting bit of “treevia” to celebrate the first day of autumn. These two trees at Chepstow were about the same size when planted roughly 20 years ago. The tulip tree (right) did get a bit of a head start, having been planted two years before its horse chestnut neighbor . But what a difference! The tulip tree, "Liriodendron tulipifera," is named for its tulip-like flowers. It grows quickly, with height increases of more than 24 inches per year. By comparison, the horse chestnut, "Aesculus hippocastanum," is a slowpoke. On the other hand, the tulip tree’s growth slows as it gets older – so who knows how these two will compare in another 20 years?
