The Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival is in its 16th year, and of course the enjoyment of fine food and wine in the mansions goes back much further. It was not unusual for a private dinner to have a written menu, typically in French. This rather bizarre example places the items within the exaggerated open mouth of a hand-sketched man’s head. The menu lists oeufs au mimosa (deviled eggs), beignets aux choux fleurs (cauliflower fritters), gigot de mouton (leg of mutton), haricots verts sautés (sauteed green beans), poulet roti (roast chicken), pâté, salade and dessert. Below are listed glace (ice cream), vins fins (fine wines), Champagne (no translation needed!), café and cigares. The creator of this menu (circa 1900-1920) is unknown. It comes from the King Family (of Kingscote) Photographs Collection.
