The Jingle Dress dance tradition of the Ojibwe people began more than a century ago with a medicine man’s dream. It was credited with curing his granddaughter who was sick, probably from the influenza pandemic of 1918. This custom spread to other Native American nations and still is practiced today. Learn more Thursday at 1 p.m. when Brenda J. Child, PhD, presents “When Art is Medicine: Ojibwe Women and the Jingle Dress Dance Tradition.” Born on the Red Lake Ojibwe Reservation in northern Minnesota, Dr. Child is Northrop Professor and former Chair of the Departments of American Studies and American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota.
