In honor of Women’s History Month, we offer a glimpse into the career of one of the most influential book cover designers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This 1902 hardcover copy of "Wanted: A Chaperon," by Paul Leicester Ford, has a distinctive Art Nouveau cover designed by Margaret Neilson Armstrong (1867-1944) with gracefully intertwining flowers surrounding the title. The book is in the collection at Kingscote. At a time when the decorative arts were still considered a man’s field, Armstrong often submitted her work under the name M.N. Armstrong to avoid this bias. She also wrote several books, including "The Field Book of Western Flowers," which featured more than 500 of her drawings. More than 270 book covers are attributed to her. (Gift of Ms. Elizabeth D. Warburton) #5WomenArtists #Womenshistorymonth #wmnhist #InternationalWomensDay #NewportMansions #Kingscote #History
