Our latest collections acquisition helps to fill in a little-known aspect of the lives of the Vanderbilt family who lived at The Breakers. This oil-on-canvas portrait by Jared Bradley “J.B.” Flagg depicts Alice Gwynne Vanderbilt, a daughter of Cornelius II and Alice Vanderbilt who died in 1873 at the age of 5. It was commissioned by the parents after the young girl’s death and finished in 1878. The picture has been hanging in Mrs. Vanderbilt’s bedroom at The Breakers for many years as a loan to the Preservation Society. It was acquired in November from a generous member of the Vanderbilt family, who also paid for the conservation of the painting and restoration of its frame in 2016. This portrait was acquired for the Permanent Collection by The Preservation Society of Newport County Collections Fund and Mr. and Mrs. John W. Brooks, Jr. The Breakers is open daily.
