On this #transformationtuesday, we take a look back at The Breakers. The Vanderbilt's bought the original house (top) in 1885 from the Lorrilard family and summered there until it was destroyed by a fire in November 1892. Work on the new house began in 1893, and construction on The Breakers (bottom photo), an Italianate-style summer "cottage" designed by Richard Morris Hunt, was completed in just under 2 years.
