For those who missed Dr. Kimberly Hamlin’s wonderful virtual discussion of her new book, “Free Thinker: Sex, Suffrage, and the Extraordinary Life of Helen Hamilton Gardener,” watch the video by clicking the link in our bio.
An associate professor of history at Miami University in Ohio, Dr. Hamlin calls Gardener “the ‘fallen woman’ who reinvented herself and became one of the best-known speakers and writers of the 19th century.” Deemed too radical for the suffragists at the start of her public career, she would become a confidant of President Woodrow Wilson and a major influence in the passage of the 19th Amendment ensuring women’s right to vote. She is little-known today – something that might change thanks to Dr. Hamlin’s book.
