Congratulations to the whitneymuseum on the fifth anniversary of its current building in Lower Manhattan, which opened on May 1, 2015.
The museum was founded in 1930 by artist, patron and collector Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, who saw a need to create a home for modern American art. We are proud to preserve her lovely bedroom in The Breakers, which contains several examples of her own artworks.
The Whitney has had several New York homes in its 90-year history. The newest was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano. It is one-third larger than The Breakers in total square footage and displays hundreds of objects from the museum’s collection of more than 25,000 works from the 20th and 21st centuries.
