In 1915, when Sukemon and Shin Itami opened two greenhouses on Southeast Holgate Boulevard between 67th and 72nd streets, streetcars crisscrossed Portland, and the Broadway Bridge was just a couple of years old. Although outside the hub of Japantown, the Itamis’ greenhouses soon became a destination for any Japanese business with horticultural needs. A century and four generations of Itamis later, the legacy that Sukemon and Shin planted on Southeast Holgate lives on. That legacy would not have been possible without Fumi Itami, their daughter-in-law, who helped their son Shigeo rebuild the shop after incarceration during World War II and kept it in motion for the next several decades.
