A historic building from the 1800s on Aviles Street in St. Augustine — on what’s promoted as America’s oldest residential street — is now facing an emergency partial demolition.
-The building at 7 Aviles Street was built in 1885 and once served as the city jail.
-The owner had already been approved to remove one exterior wall while converting the building into a single-family residence.
-During that work, contractors found other walls in danger of failing, and an engineer determined additional walls were buckling and could collapse.
-What happens next: the city called an emergency public hearing to review conditions for the partial demolition and what historic materials may be preserved.
